Temple in Jerusalem
Jerusalem Temple Paintings
The Jerusalem Temple was located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and served as the only permitted place for sacrifices to the One G”d, which were offered by the Kohens and Levites.
The Temple was also an object of pilgrimage for all Jews three times a year: on Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot.
According to the Bible, the portable Tabernacle of the meeting served as a temporary temple after the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt and before the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Temple was a building and in this it differed from the altar and the open sanctuary (bama).
The Temple contained objects symbolizing the presence of God (the Ark of the Covenant with the Tablets of the Covenant and cherubim), as well as utensils for the priesthood.
