When I started drawing this new series of paintings on old Israeli newspapers, I felt a strong excitement and inspiration. I knew that these newspapers contain a lot of historical materials and articles about Israel’s wars and victories for independence. This information gave me a tremendous amount of ideas for creating new works.
The painting shows a paratrooper soldier praying and putting on tefillin against the backdrop of a 1967 newspaper. I felt that this was a very important moment to depict because that year saw the Six-Day War, in which Israel achieved a crucial victory. I wanted to show that soldiers during this war prayed and believed in God to gain strength and protection.
Moreover, I believe that it is important to draw this because these newspapers contain historical moments that have been forgotten over time. My work connects Israel’s history, the army, and faith, making it very special.
