When I painted this picture, I had the history of the Jewish people in mind — ancient, full of trials, but always imbued with faith and hope. The broken chess pieces symbolize the great empires that tried to erase our people from the face of the earth: Egypt, Babylon, Rome. Their greatness sank in the turbulent waves of history, but our people, like these seagulls, have always found a way to rise again.

The nests built upon the ruins of the past are a symbol of our return home, to the Promised Land. Even amid ruins and storms, we always found the strength to build, to grow, to live. The seagulls represent us, the Jews, soaring above the chaos, but always returning to where our hearts lie, in Israel.

The broken crown reminds me of the destruction of the Temple and the exiles that seemed like the end. But next to it, an egg — a symbol of new life. This is the hope we pass down from generation to generation. It speaks of the fact that, despite everything, we have kept our faith in God, in the Torah, and in our land.

The stormy sea represents the diaspora, exile, and persecution. The waves tried to overwhelm us, but we not only survived, but also found our place in the sun again, returning to Israel. This painting is a reminder that we build the future on the foundation of the past. Our roots are deep, and therefore, we cannot be broken.

Look at this work and feel the energy of eternal struggle and rebirth. This is the story of a people who, like a seagull, return to their nest despite all the storms. It is the story of us — the Jewish people and our return to Israel.
