This painting is more than just a landscape for me—it’s a doorway to the past, to the days when I served in the army on the Golan Heights. It’s filled with memories of long hours on duty, the scorching sun, and the vast open spaces where every rock and thorn seemed to hold the weight of history.
In the foreground stand the thistles—stubborn, resilient, and unyielding. They grew everywhere, no matter how dry or rocky the ground was. Back then, I hardly noticed them, but over time, I came to see them as symbols of endurance and strength. Like soldiers, they stand tall, guarding the land against all odds, defying the harshness of their surroundings.
The Golan Heights hold a special place in Israel’s history and its security, but for me, they also represent a place of personal growth and transformation. Here, on the edge of the sky and earth, I learned what it means to be strong, alert, and determined.
From this vantage point, the Sea of Galilee glimmers in the distance, reflecting the sunlight like a mirror of hope. It serves as a reminder that after every challenge, peace can follow. The Golan Heights are a land of contrasts—dry grasses and green trees, sharp thorns and smooth waters. These contrasts mirror life itself, where struggles often stand side by side with beauty and hope.
I named this painting “Guardians of the Golan Heights” because for me, these thistles are more than plants. They are guardians—not just of the borders of this land, but of the memories of those who served and protected it.
