From Kiev to Jerusalem: The Making of an Artist

From an early age, Alex Levin displayed a remarkable sensitivity to color, emotion, and symbolism. After serving three years in the Israel Defense Forces, he pursued studies in industrial and web design. But his true passion always remained art — the language through which he could express his connection to the spiritual and historical soul of the Jewish people.

For over ten years, Levin studied under Professor Baruch Elron, Chairman of the Israel Artist Association. Elron, known for his surreal and symbolic style, became not only Levin’s mentor but also a profound influence on his artistic philosophy.
Through this mentorship, Levin mastered both traditional and innovative techniques, learning how to communicate emotion and spirituality through light, texture, and form.

His works have been recognized and collected by cultural icons such as Richard Gere, Madonna, Oscar Peterson, and former Israeli President Ezer Weizman, among others — testament to his universal appeal.

A Master of Technique: Between Realism and Surrealism

Alex Levin’s art is a bridge between the ancient and the contemporary. He works in oil, acrylic, pencil, charcoal, and tempera, but his favorite is the 16th-century multi-layering technique, combining tempera and oil without brush strokes. This method creates an otherworldly luminosity — a soft, glowing surface that seems to breathe with spiritual life.

He describes this process as meditative — a dialogue between artist and canvas that allows deeper layers of emotion and meaning to emerge.
Whether painting Jerusalem’s golden light or the reflections of Venice’s canals, Levin’s multi-layered technique brings depth and mystery to each scene.

Global Recognition and Awards

In 2007, Alex Levin received the Medal Award for Contribution to Judaic Art from the Knesset — one of Israel’s highest cultural honors.
This recognition affirmed his role as a leading figure in contemporary Jewish art — an artist preserving the traditions of his heritage while expanding them into the modern age.

Levin’s paintings have been featured in galleries and exhibitions around the world, from New York and Paris to Jerusalem and Venice, drawing collectors and admirers who find in his art both beauty and spiritual resonance.

The Major Themes of Alex Levin’s Art

Over the decades, Levin has created several distinctive thematic collections — each revealing a different facet of his artistic and spiritual journey.

1. Tradition of Jewish Heritage

This powerful collection focuses on Jerusalem’s Western Wall and its surrounding ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, such as Mea Shearim. Levin captures the rhythm of Jewish life — prayer, devotion, and continuity — with warmth and reverence. His subjects include Jewish rituals, attributes, and spiritual symbols, painted in scenes that feel both ancient and timeless.

“For me,” Levin explains, “the most important task is to pour onto the canvas the spirit and the tears shed by generations mourning for the destroyed Temple.”

2. Tel Aviv – The Hill of Spring

Inspired by his favorite season, this collection celebrates Tel Aviv — its vibrant people, sunlit architecture, and Mediterranean atmosphere. White buildings, clear skies, and golden beaches dominate these canvases, radiating optimism and modern energy.
Levin contrasts Tel Aviv’s lightness with the spiritual gravity of Jerusalem, showing the balance of ancient and new Israel.

3. Venice Through the Mask’s Eyes

This series presents a striking departure — a surreal, dreamlike vision of Venice during its carnival season. The paintings focus on the mask, both as a symbol and a mystery.
Levin’s fascination with Venice began in 2002, when his early “Mask Collection” earned him a scholarship to the Venice Academy of Art. There, he refined his understanding of color harmony and composition. The resulting works blend Venetian elegance with his own introspective symbolism.

4. Symphony of Rain

A poetic cycle of forty paintings inspired by music.
Each canvas in Symphony of Rain corresponds to a composer, a melody, or a mood — from misty dawns to rain-soaked evenings and star-filled Venetian nights. Together, these works form a visual symphony, an ode to rhythm and emotion expressed through color and atmosphere.

5. Colors of Judaism

In this ongoing monumental project, Levin seeks to portray the millennia of Jewish history — from joy and prayer to exile and redemption.
The series, still in progress, will include 50–60 paintings, of which over 20 are already completed.

“People feel the good, magical aura and energy from my drawings,” Levin says. “It’s insanely pleasant. I am doing my job with all my heart.”

These works carry not just artistic skill, but a heartfelt mission — to preserve the light, faith, and resilience of the Jewish people through color and emotion.
